This is a legitimate petition.
Memes: not just for teenagers anymore

Finally! A meme for those of us out of not only high school, but college. Thanks, darkpoole!

1. What bill do you hate paying the most?
Credit card bills, because I can’t do them automatically, and I get Elf’s BofA card mixed up with mine. I’ve forgotten to pay his a couple times because I pay mine first, because it’s due earlier, then ignore the notices for his card, because I’ve “already paid the BofA bill.” Bleh!

2. Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner?
Wow, we haven’t been out to dinner for a good long while. I really don’t remember

3. Do you regret losing your virginity to whom you lost it? [corrected for grammar]
Hell, no. ^_^

4. If you could go back and change one thing what would it be?
Jeebus! How do you pick one thing? Um, how about getting my depression taken care of years earlier?

5. What do you want to be doing right now?
Playing with Filter Forge or working on Collage Art.

6. There is no Question 6. It's a myth, like the Loch Nest Monster or [compassionate conservativism.] (my addition)

7. What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A writer, an artist, a nun.

8. How many colleges did you attend?
Two. One for a BA and another (cough) for an MA.

9. Why did you choose the shirt that you have on right now?
It’s just something I wear under my sweatshirt in the morning to tide me over to my shower, which comes after I go to the gym.

10. What are your thoughts on gas prices?
I wish they would encourage real conservation, but alas, it’s probably just the working poor who will get shafted again. >:-/

11. If you could move anywhere and take someone with you where would it be?
Probably British Columbia, obviously with Elf. Further north, beautiful land, away from American politics, but still pretty close to friends and family. Either that or Germany, if I could speak German…

12. First thought when the alarm went off this morning?
I don’t use an alarm – I usually just wake up between 7am and 7:30am. This morning I woke up when Elf was clattering around the bathroom. ;-) My first thoughts were probably about how hard it was to get up.

13. Last thought before going to sleep last night?
I can’t remember my last thought, for heaven’s sake. But I usually think myself to sleep by working on the various aspects of my Twilight world – races, geography, magic, science, etc.

14. Do you miss being a child?
No, though sometimes I miss some aspects of childhood, like political ignorance.

15. There isn't a question 15, either. Somebody needs to learn how to count.

16. What errand/chore do you despise?
Cleaning the shower, definitely. I’m not hot about dusting or vacuuming, either.

17. If you didn't have to work, would you volunteer?
I kind of do for Jackson Bottom, but not enough. Basically I am lazy and selfish of my time. :-/

18. Get up early or sleep in?
Sleep in, generally, though not unduly. On week days I’m usually up between 7am and 7:30am. Weekends I usually get up closer to 8am.

19. What is your favorite cartoon character?
Bugs Bunny. ^_^

20. Favorite thing to do at night?
Sleep. I love sleep.

21. Have you found real love yet?
Oh, yes! ^_^

22. When did you first start feeling old?
When my knees started to make those weird noises when I went up the stairs.

24. Your favorite lunch meat?
Rare roast beef.

25. What do you get every time you go into Wal-Mart?
The only time I’ve been in a Wal-Mart was to go to the bathroom.

26. Beach or lake?
Beach, preferably wild and rocky, with forests not too far away.

27. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
No, but it needs to change and grow to remain relevant.

28. Do you own property?
Yes – Elf and I own a house together.

29. Favorite Guilty pleasure?
Computer solitaire.

30. Favorite movie you wouldn't want anyone to find out about?
I’m not really ashamed of my movie preferences. I don’t care who knows how much I like (good) animated films, for instance.

31. What's your drink?
Beer, wine, or milk.

32. Cowboys or Indians?
Indians.

33. Cops or Robbers?
Robbers, but something like a cat burglar who steals only from the rich.

34. Who from high school would you like to run in to?
Christy, I think. I’d most like to see Liz again, but as she has apparently died, that would be tough.

35. What radio station is your car radio tuned to right now?
KBPS, the local, listener-supported, classical station.

36. Norm or Cliff?
Norm.

37. Grey's or The Office?
I don’t know either of them, though from what I’ve heard, I’d probably prefer The Office.

38. Worst relationship mistake that you wish you could take back?
Ever getting together with Pat.

39. Do you like the person that sits directly across from you at work?
I work from home. Sometimes Ezri sits in the window across from me, and yes, I like her, though she is an Evil Kitty.

40. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?
Mike Rowe, from Dirty Jobs. With all my friends and his camera crew. Party!

41. Indoors or Outdoors?
Indoors, pretty much. :-(

42. Have you ever crashed your vehicle?
A couple fender-benders (one of which was actually my fault), but no real crashes.

43. Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher for its intended purpose?
No.

44. Last book you read?
Sabriel by Garth Nix. I’m working on the sequel, Lirael, now.

45. Do you have a teddy bear?
Yes. Elf bought it for me from FOA Schwartz on a business trip early in our marriage. I still sleep with Barnaby when Elf is away, or if I’m feeling mushy when I take a nap. I also still have the stuffed lamb I got for my 16th birthday. I slept with it nightly until I got married. I also still have Pink Bunny, who I got when I was four and slept with until I got Mindy (the lamb).

46. Strangest place you have ever brushed your teeth
My teeth? I have no idea… @_@?

47. Somewhere in California you've never been and would like to go?
Yosemite or Death Valley.

48. Do you go to church?
Not for a long time, though I’m still a member of Dharma Rain Zen Center.

49. At this point in your life would you rather start a new career or a new relationship?
New career, though I am doing what I love (Photoshop work) now. Maybe get more clients? :-D

50. How old are you?
I’ll be forty-four in March.

Not reading LJ last few days. The Project from Hell has eaten my life. Well, actually, I've enjoyed most of the actual work I've done, but the deadline is killing Leslie, so it's at least wounding me. >_<

The book WILL go out today, by the gods. Just waiting for Leslie to send a pdf, then we talk, then I go in, and by all that's holy we will send this $@#!* thing off to Korea!

Then we shall all get drunk.

And there was much rejoicing.

*yay*

misandrous lepidoptera feed the custard monkeys

Much better today. I took two naps yesterday, and felt better after the second. I actually walked to the store, as the cupboard was verily bare. This morning it was a real struggle to get out of bed, but now that I'm up, I don't feel so bad. My throat is still itchy, which makes me cough sometimes, and I'm stuffy, but I don't feel so brain dead. So I'll be back to work today, though I will probably give the gym another miss -- I can just see me on the elliptical snorting and coughing...

So, I have paying work, so I'd better get to it. ^_^

Bleh, I say! Bleh!

I have a cold. Ooooh, yeah. I got a sore throat Saturday, and though I did go to the Portland Christmas Revels (which was WOOOOOOOOOOOONDERFUL as always), later my throat did get to the point where I thought I should stay in, and thus I missed Denise's Hanukah party -- for the second year in a row, dammit! Yesterday was slow and tired, but not too bad. Last night SUCKED.

I woke up about 2:20-2:25. Next time I looked at the clock, it was 2:40. Then 3:20, then 3:28, then 3:38, then 3:59...you get the idea. It was the Night That Never Fucking Ended!!! It was just roll over, nod off for 5-10 minutes, wake up (sometimes with a start), try to stick my feet out further, twitch, fidget, roll over again, nod off, try not to wake up Elf...for hours. I couldn't even think of interesting things to occupy my febrile brain; it was all just kind of a haze of fidgetting and worrying that I wasn't sleeping. I finally gave up and got up with Elf at 5:10, all honking and headachy. I watched a couple home shows and a "Ghosthunters." Now I'm just skimming LJ and posting this, and when I've got the cats fed, I'll go back to bed. Hope I can sleep!

Meanwhile, here's a silly thing from cheesepuppet for your delictation:

1. Your rock star name (first pet, current car): Jingles Prius

2. Your gangsta name (fave ice cream flavor, favorite type of shoe): Peanut-Butter-and-Chocolate Birkenstock (shouldn't this be my hippy name?)

3. Your Native American name (favorite color, favorite animal): Blue Cat (I can live with that)

4. Your soap opera name (middle name, city where you were born): Marie Ashland

5. Your Star Wars name (the first 3 letters of your last name, first 2 of your first name): Strika (this is not how I first learnt Star Wars names, but it produces something less odious...)

6. Superhero name (2nd favorite color, favorite drink): Green Milk to the rescue!

7. NASCAR name (the first names of your grandfathers): Charles Robert (or Eldon Robert, 'cause Grandpa Scripter always went by his middle name)

8. Stripper name (the name of your favorite perfume/cologne/scent, favorite candy): Rose Dark Chocolate

10. TV weather anchor name (your 5th grade teacher’s last name, a major city that starts with the same letter): Snyder Sacramento

11. Spy name (your favorite season/holiday, flower): Autumn Rose (that's nice!)

12. Cartoon name: (favorite fruit, article of clothing you’re wearing right now): Cherry Clogs

13. Hippie name (What you ate for breakfast, your favorite tree): Oatmeal Aspen

Heh. Now to finish scanning, feed the Ravenous Mawstm, and then SLEEP!!!

Your Daily Dose of Outrage, brought to you by King Dubbya

After vetoing a bipartisan law to give health insurance to millions of Americans, mostly children:
"'Poor kids first,' Bush said. 'Secondly, I believe in private medicine, not the federal government running the health care system.'"

WHAT THE FUCK??!!

What the living hell is he thinking?! Yet another mind-boggling case of "do they even listen to themselves?"

I swear to the gods, I could literally slap someone right now. Hard. Or commit serious property dammage. (Yeah, that might sound kind of wimpy, but coming from me, it's like saying I could stab someone in the neck with an icepick.)

Furious? Outraged? Ready to slash the tires of the next Hummer with a "W" sticker? If not, go here for the rest of the story.

my gods, when will it stop? when will people GET it?

9/12: On 9/11

This is a little rambling: it's been hard to put all this together.

In response to a friend's post on 9/11:

I had completely forgotten what day it was (which is not unusual for me in general), until I read winterbadger's entry here. Then, of course, at the gym, CNN was all over memorials. I confess that my initial reaction was resistance – this war is so wrong and this administration is so corrupt, that while by no means do I "blame the victims" or would wish to downplay the bravery of the police and firefighters and civilians who risked their lives to help, I seem to balk at media-driven mass-mourning. Personal grief I can sympathise with, but sometimes I just think that the US, as a whole, is using 9/11 as an excuse to wallow and play victim and make everything bad Not Our Fault.

And that's not fair to those who did help and those who lost loved ones in the attacks and in the rescue. I tried to take a deliberate moment to look at the situation more clearly, more "neutrally," in a way, and reflect on the horror and sacrifice and courage of that day. I did do this, but I'm sorry to say that my day-to-day concerns pushed it all out of my mind more quickly than I'd like to admit.

A friend who posted yesterday said that “six years later, the events of 9/11/01 barely seem to register in mass media. I was at the zoo today ($2 Tuesday) and people were out, having fun, watching the animals. I didn't notice flags lowered … or anything else.”

And then I thought, why shouldn't people enjoy the zoo? When do we move on? If six years is too short a time to remember 9/11 with national grieving and lowered flags and closed businesses, when is long enough? Should we have a national holiday, like Memorial Day or Labor Day? Should we replay our fears and grief and anger every year for the next 10? 20? 100? And if so, how do we avoid 9/11/20xx from fossilising into just an excuse to feel self-righteous in our victimisation? Or, conversely, how can we keep the date from being a center of internal bickering, name-calling, and hate-mongering?

What happened on 9/11/2001 was evil. The people who planned and carried out those attacks were sick and, yes, evil – I don’t care what the alleged provocation was. But we are not unique. If every country ground to a halt every time there was a terrorist attack on its soil, there would be many nations that would have simply collapsed under the weight of their own pain. It is not morally worse that it happened in NYC that in Dafur or Bosnia or Palestine; it’s just scarier to us. Our surge in unity and compassion towards the victims was accompanied by an equal surge in hate and violence. Retribution – well we’ve seen how well it works in, say, Israel, eh?

I think one thing we have to do is take our collective head out of our asses. We are not the best, most righteous, most intelligent nation in the world. The US does not “deserve” peace and prosperity any more (or any less!) than any other country. We need to step outside our smug little glass bubble and take a look at how our actions and policies affect other peoples and how those same actions and policies might come back to bite us. Find the reasons and causes, not just lash out with violence. Sometimes I despair, but I have to believe that we can learn from this.

My heart is with all those lives were changed irrevocably by 9/11. I am proud of the people who rushed to help regardless of their own lives. I salute everyone who helped in other ways – with food, water, money, blood donations, or just a compassionate heart and willing hand. May we not forget what happened, but may we see it clearly, so we can prevent it from happening again.

Body Worlds 3

This entry is about my reactions to the Body Worlds 3 exhibit at OMSI. Some of the descriptions may be disturbing, so if you're kind of squeamish about dead people and descriptions of dead people with the skin off, you might want to skip this. (Actually, if you're squeamish, don't click the "Body Worlds" link above, either!)

Body Worlds was fascinating. And really surreal. The muscles looked like freeze-dried meat and there was a weird odor about the place that made me a little queasy. And do you know how weird testicles look without a scrotum? Like ping-pong balls in miniture silk stockings.

There were pieces of people -- organs, bones, legs, etc. -- in glass cases, with interesting placards telling you all about the piece in question. There were also thin slices of bodies or body parts to show a "birds-eye view," so to speak. This included slices of a smoker's lungs, a brain with a tumour, and an hugely enlarged heart, as well as slices of healthy bodies.

Then there were the full human bodies. How to describe? They were usually posed in some interesting way -- sometimes quite beautifully -- and different parts would be exposed to demonstrate different things. There was a beautiful one of a woman posed as if she'd just shot an arrow, though the guy holding his own skin was kind of disturbing. There was a beautiful but bizzare tableau of a couple posed like acrobats: the man is standing, legs slightly flexed, holding the woman, who is supporting herself by kneeling on his thighs. Their heads are bowed towards each other and the woman's head has been split so that the man's face is actually partially inside her skull.

This kind of "exploded view" was quite common: the artist/s had moved various body elements out of the way so you could see what was underneath or inside. Muscles detatched and pulled away like wings. Heads sliced in half and parted to show the brain or inside of the skull. Body cavaties opened like steamer trunks to show organs...or even just left empty to show the interior space. "Woman pedalling" was sliced into three vertical parts, showing the cross-section of muscles on the left and right sides of the body; the skull was also sliced in three. All the full bodies had realistic glass eyes. Very few of the bodies had much in the way of skin, and I don't believe there was a complete face anywhere, though the mouths usually had lips and they often left on the nose and/or eyebrows.

It's not something I'm not likely to forget soon, yet at the same time I'm not sure I really absorbed the whole thing properly. It feels a little like it was a dream I had rather than a real experience.

If you ever get the chance, and you're not squeamish, I highly recommend the exhibit. I, personally, am squeamish when it comes to "live" surgeries and stuff on tv, but I did pretty well with this, except for the unreality factor (^_^;). It helped that you knew these people were dead and there was no liquid -- everything was dry-looking and stiff.

Wow.

Here I am again. And so it goes... ^_^

Had a decent weekend. Elf was gone most of Friday and most of Saturday, but I kept busy with artsy things -- mostly, anyway. I didn't get as much creative stuff done as I'd hoped because uploading my photos took a bizarrely long time, and then I backed up my Amber Lotus files, which was deathly slow. Still, I have been doing more Apophysis fractals and have started posting to my deviantART account again.

We had Aleta, Doug, and Phyllis over for dinner last night (they were delicious!). Elf made mac and cheese from scratch, with bacon and leeks and cherry tomatoes. 'Twas scrumptious. It was basically just an evening of chat, which is always good with these folks. Phyllis had a nasty headache, alas, but othere than that, fun was had by all.

Today will be gym (I only went three days last week!) and Amber Lotus stuff. It's grey and cool, but not cold, and it was raining earlier this morning, though it's stopped now. Very lovely. We've had a very cool and cloudy August so far. Weird.

Okees. Must dash. Peace, all!
